Montgomery County Recorder of Deeds Announces Fall
Mobile Veteran Discount Identification Events

Norristown, August 30, 2017 – Montgomery County Recorder of Deeds Jeanne Sorg announces nine upcoming Veterans’ Discount Identification Events across the county.

“I am pleased to continue to partner with elected officials, local municipalities and active adult centers to host our Veterans’ Discount ID Program at locations throughout Montgomery County,” said Sorg. “It was my goal to expand this program, and taking it on the road to our county’s veteran population both ensures veterans’ military discharge papers are safeguarded and honors their military service by providing discounts on goods and services,” she continued.

Upcoming locations for the Recorder of Deeds mobile events include parts of Eastern Montco, Upper Perkiomen, North Penn and Pottstown. Veterans also have a choice of daytime and weekend hours to obtain a discount identification card.

The program is supported by almost 500 businesses in Montgomery County and the region, which provide discounts on various goods and services, including financial, legal, health care and real estate services, home décor and dining and entertainment. The Recorder of Deeds office is always accepting new merchants to the program, and prospective vendors are encouraged to apply online through the website or call the office for more information.

“Without the generosity of these participating merchants,” Sorg stressed, “this program would not be as successful as it has been.”

In addition to providing copies of military discharge papers to the individual veteran who may have lost or misplaced their original papers, the office receives requests from funeral homes and immediate family members of veterans who need access to a veteran’s discharge papers to assist in receiving veterans’ benefits. Typically it can take four to six weeks for a veteran to obtain a copy of their DD214 from the National Archives, but by recording it at the Recorder of Deeds office in Norristown, veterans can safeguard their discharge papers locally.

“More veterans every day are recording their DD-214s with our office,” said Sorg, “and it is comforting to know that we are able to provide those veterans and their immediate family instant access to this important document should the need arise. Recently, our office has even been able to help a couple of families, who proved their relation, fill in their family history by assisting them in obtaining copies of their ancestors’ discharge papers,” she added. “These discharge papers list service dates, medals and certificates the veteran earned,” Sorg continued, “and while we protect all of that information from the general public view, it is heartwarming to witness these verified families react to seeing an important piece of their family history.”

For more information about the Veterans’ Discount ID Program visit montcopa.org/rod or call 610-278-3292.  To obtain a card at one of these mobile events, veterans need to bring their DD214 (military discharge) and a photo identification (such as a driver’s license). Their paperwork will be recorded and within minutes they will receive a Montgomery County Veteran Discount ID card.
